Where You From

by Hatch on August 20, 2009

A surprising journey into rural American hip-hop, Where You From follows a beat far from the urban streets where the music was born.

Where You From

With dense redwood forests, Rocky Mountain vistas, and the dramatic rhythms of hip-hop as a backdrop, Where You From enters the lives of three extraordinary individuals as it chronicles their pursuit of acceptance, fame, and even salvation. The feature length documentary is a visually stunning, provocative portrait of young men confronting small town life, broken families, and drug addiction– ultimately seeking triumph in their music.

Sabrina Lee has been telling stories through her avant-garde dance choreography and multi-media performances for years. In 2005, she passed a hand-painted sign reading “Hip-Hop Show” in a cow pasture in rural Humboldt County, and it was then the obsession to reveal this fascinating sub-culture took over her life. Lee studied film while earning her BA from Duke University, where she first developed a keen interest in the medium. She currently lives in Montana with her husband and two children. “Where You From” is her first film.

Matthew Buzzell is an award-winning Los Angeles-based filmmaker. Matthew earned a MFA from the American Film Institute in 1999. His thesis film received The Martin Ritt Foundation Award and Matthew was honored as Director of the Year. In 2001, The Teresa Heinz Foundation commissioned Matthew to make “What A Girl Wants.” A documentary about the influence of media culture on the self-esteem of teenage girls, it was featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” Matthew’s portrait of a jazz vocal legend, “Jimmy Scott: If You Only Knew,” premiered on PBS’s “Independent Lens” in 2004, winning the Audience Award. 2006 saw two of Matthew’s films premiere at The Tribeca Film Festival. “Tell Me Do You Miss Me” chronicles the bittersweet final bows of the critically acclaimed NYC indie-rock band Luna as they mount their farewell world tour and look toward their futures with great uncertainty. “Putting The River In Reverse” documents the historic collaboration between music legends Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint as they embark on the first major recording sessions to take place in New Orleans in the weeks post-Hurricane Katrina. In 2007, Matthew created a number of promotional films, EPKS, and music videos for artists as diverse as Diana Krall, Joe Henry, and Bad Religion. On April 1, 2008, Matthew’s film “Companeras” premiered on “Independent Lens.” The film is a portrait of Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles—America’s first all-female Mariachi band.
