Renner receives another Spirit Award Nomination for his in the critically acclaimed new Iraq War drama,”The Hurt Locker.” Roger Ebert said Renner “immediately goes on the short list for an Oscar nomination.”  Renner plays lead bomb technician Staff Sgt. Renner received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead for his breakout performance in “Dahmer” (2002) in the title role as the notorious real-life cannibalistic serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, a critically-acclaimed portrayal of one of the most infamous criminals of modern times.
Renner parlayed the positive notice he received into his first major mainstream outing, starring opposite Colin Farrell and Samuel L. Jackson the big budget action-oriented film adaptation of the 70s crime drama “S.W.A.T.” (2003) playing an ousted member of the Los Angeles Police Department’s S.W.A.T team who comes to odds with his ex-partner (Farrell).
He then starred opposite Charlize Theron in “North Country” (2005), playing her former high school flame and current supervisor at an iron mine in northern Minnesota who conspires against her attempts to stop the harassment inflicted upon the female employees by their male coworkers.
While North Country was playing in theaters, Renner was filming his next project, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert FordÓ (lensed in 2005), a western about the would-be member of the notorious James Gang who turns on his mentor (Brad Pitt) out of fear and delusions of grandeur only to be stiffed on the reward and later charged with murder.

HATCH GROUNDBREAKER GREGG HELVEY NOMINATED FOR OSCAR

it has been an absolute whirlwind couple of weeks for HATCH Groundbreaker GREGG HELVEY as his film Kavi, which deals with the issue of child labour, has been nominated in the Short Film (Live Action) category at the upcoming 82nd annual Academy Awards.
The film, produced by Guneet Monga, Harish Amin and Helvey, was filmed entirely in Wai, near Mumbai. It tells the story of a young boy who wants to play cricket and go to school, but is forced to work in a brick kiln.

“We are extremely happy and would like to thank each and every person who has put in his or her efforts into this project. We had celebrated when we won the Student Oscar for Kavi and that is just what we are planning right now,” Monga told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Helvey, who was a student of the University of South California, came to India without enough finances to produce the film. The film has been subtitled in English and won various awards at international festivals.   Made at a shoestring budget of just over $30,000 (Rs.1.4 million) it was shot in just eight days.

Jeff Bridges Oscar nominated for the moving film “Crazy Heart”
Jeff has been nominated four times before, for The Last Picture Show in 1971, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot in 1974, Starman in 1984 and The Contender in 2000.  Jeff has starred in such epic favorites as the 1982 sci-fi cult classic TRON (1982), with brother Beau Bridges and Michelle Pfeiffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), as the ever-optimistic inventor Preston Tucker in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), with Robin Williams in The Fisher King (1991), American Heart (1992), Fearless (1993, shot by HATCH Alumni Allen Daviau), The Cohen Brothers’ The Big Lebowski (1998) and more recently he seized the moment as a bald-pated villain as Robert Downey Jr.’s nemesis in Iron Man (2008).

We are pleased to announce the second annual HATCHfest Asheville will take place from April 15 -18, 2010. The event will bring in the brightest minds from the intersection of design and technology – including acclaimed and award-wining film directors, fashion designers, inventors, journalists, songwriters and architects . Our mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators through mentorship.

During the week, HATCHfest Asheville will host educational events, networking parties, workshops, concerts, film screenings and exhibits for the general public. The festival pairs the mentors with selected Groundbreakers, young creative professionals chosen from around the country, for one-on-one sessions and small group workshops.

One of the highlights for 2010 is the participation of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and acclaimed singer/songwriter Matt Morris. Matt released his chart-topping debut album, “When Everything Breaks Open” in January. The record has received critical acclaim, radio airplay and has landed him on several TV shows including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the George Lopez Show and David Letterman. Matt’s has toured extensively with such artists as the Indigo Girls and Joan Osborne and has been featured at the Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits Music Festivals.  Matt is one of music’s most renowned songwriters.  His songs have been performed by Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguillera and Kelly Clarkson.

Two young songwriters will be chosen as HATCHfest Asheville’s Music Groundbreakers. These Groundbreakers will get the opportunity work one-on-one with Matt Morris, record a song and music video on the Lennon Bus.  They will also get to perform at a special Matt Morris concert during the festival. This opportunity is presented by HATCHfest Asheville sponsors’ 98.1 The River and Creative Allies.

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a non-profit 501(c)(3) mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility. Working together with some of the biggest names in music, the Lennon Bus encourages students to play music, write songs, engineer recording sessions and produce video projects using the latest audio, video, and live sound equipment.

My HATCH Experience – Phil Newman
Although I am only 22 years old, Hachfest has defined the start of my career as a filmmaker. Since my first HATCHfest in 2006, nearly every connection I’ve made and every job I’ve had and major connection i’ve made has been somehow related to Hatch. I have worked on national television shows, commercials, and feature films all through mentors and fellow filmmakers I met at hatch. This experience has allowed me to step up and work alongside those who have mentored me and actually show them what they have taught me.

This past January I had the privilege to travel down to Belize to shoot a short documentary, accompanied by a friend and fellow student, Zach Osterhout. Ironically Zack and I first worked together in the Journalism lab at Hatch in 2006. The entire trip was paid for, from Sailing on a 50 ft Catamaran and diving on the great reef to soaring above Mayan ruins in a powered hang-glider. I was even fortunate enough to spend several days exploring ruins up “The River of Strange Faces” with Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Sense and Sensibility), and his two sons, Mason and Hahnn.

It was a life-changing experience to not only visit a third-world country but also shoot day in and day out like a professional. While I was there I also made dozens of new contacts and got an offer to stay down there and start a production company. It was an incredible experience that I would not have otherwise had, if it weren’t for my involvement with Hatch, as it was my mentor from the festival, CNBC Producer Jeff Pohlman, which landed me this job.

One of Montana Ballet Company’s Artistic Directors, Amy Stoddart, is collaborating with renowned music producer Patrick Leonard and local student Emmy winning filmmaker Jennifer Grace on an original contemporary multi media ballet called ‘The First Day’.  It will world premiere at Bozeman’s Emerson Cultural Center on May 14th 2010.

Patrick Leonard, famous for long time collaborations with Madonna, Pink Floyd, Elton John and Michael Jackson met Jennifer Grace, a Montana State University graduate student, at the Jim Henson Company in the summer of 2009. Grace was working at the Henson Company as part of the Emmy Foundation mentorship program. Leonard, also a member of the board of directors for the Martha Graham company, had been developing an original story written by his daughter Jessica into a contemporary ballet. Jessica Leonard is a Suma Cum Laude graduate in English Literature from UC Boulder and was also the muse for the song ‘Dear Jessie’ written by Madonna over 20 years ago. Speaking to a crowd of more than 200 people gathered at Montana State University for the annual Girls for a Change conference Saturday, 2009 HATCH Groundbreaker Musician Stephanie Quayle continued to inspire, “Nothing could stand in my way,” she said. “I live my dream, I love what I do, I’m never going to quit. Quitting’s not an option.”

Quayle gave the keynote address at the conference, which started in 1996 as an informal group of women and their daughters working to empower young girls. On Saturday, about 200 girls attended the daylong conference, said organizer Kate Peterson.  Girls in seventh- through 12th-grade were able to choose from 29 workshops offering a variety of learning opportunities, including volunteering, songwriting (taught by Quayle) and Bollywood dancing.  Girls for a Change is a program of Thrive, a Bozeman nonprofit organization. Throughout the year, members of the program’s core group participate in service projects, fundraising and leadership-building classes.

In the spirit of mentorship, two songwriters will be selected to work on the bus during the weekend.  During their session they will be filmed and recorded.  In addition, acclaimed singer / songwriter Matt Morris is coming to Hatchfest.  Matt will work with local songwriters on board the  bus. Matt Morris began his musical career at age seven and has written songs for Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Reba McEntire and Justin Timberlake. He signed to Timberlake’s Tennman Records label and went on to tour with Grammy award winners The Indigo Girls and Joan Osborne. Matt is a multi-talented artist and his versatility is evident on his 2010 release When Everything Breaks Open, co-produced by Timberlake and Charlie Sexton. The album of original songs contains elements of rock, soul, pop and folk music and displays Matt’s uncanny ability to connect with audiences, not only through passionate live performances, but also as a recording artist.

explore.org presents the explore/Hatch Award to champion the selfless acts of others through a film competition at this year’s HATCHfest Asheville.

The explore/Hatch Award presented by explore.org will be given to a filmmaker whose short film shows a group or individual hero striving for a better world.

explore.org is a multimedia organization that documents leaders around the world who have devoted their lives to extraordinary causes. Both educational and inspirational, they creates a portal into the soul of humanity by championing the selfless acts of others. In line with explore.org’s mission, HATCH inspires others and makes a positive impact on people and the planet in a creative way through film, music, photography, journalism, fashion, architecture, design, technology and more.

Winners of the first explore/Hatch Award presented by explore.org will be flown to HATCHfest Asheville April 15 – 18th and a new winner to HATCHfest Bozeman September 22 – 25 to be presented with a prize from explore.org founder and documentary filmmaker, Charles Annenberg Weingarten, and HATCH.  If you or someone you know has made a film highlighting a cause that inspires others to make a difference, submissions are now open.
